We learned a valuable lesson four years ago. The most valuable technological advance is electricity. Without it, the others are all useless.
When Hurricane Isabel rampaged through our city, we were without power for a week; others went even longer.
We couldn't vacuum the carpets or wash clothes or cook meals, we lost everything in our refrigerator and freezer, forget reading a book by candlelight or flashlight, because batteries had become a very dear commodity.
And a battery-operated radio is no longer a source of entertainment, with the delightful shows of yore. It's all shock-talk shows and what passes these days as music (not my choices).
We really depended on our newspaper for information, and even that now seems to have taken a turn for the worse, referring readers to its Web site instead of giving you the news. Heaven help the poor subscriber who has no computer.

I think the computer/Internet has made the biggest impact on my life. So much information is only a moment away. You can be in communication with people from all over the world. New is at your fingertips. It can even be used in your business to make a living. The uses of a computer just go on and on. Yet, I think I'll have to say I'd not want to be without transportation, so I can go visit my family in other states.

My microwave. I could not live without it. I always cook a lot at 1 time so I don't have to bother cooking more than 3 or 4 times a wk. So I just heat up the leftovers and I have instant dinners. If I want to take left over roast chicken and make a chicken pie, I mix veggies and chicken and a crm of soup, and top with the leftover mashes potatoes, and I have a new dinner that took 10 minutes to make.

Fabulon or any Spry on Ironing aid. I had to do the ironing for my family when growing up. My dad only wore 100% Cotton Long Sleeved shirts. They were a pill. It was a god send.

Same as you, it would be the washing machine, it broke down a few weeks ago and I hated lugging every thing to the Laundromat.

Does the car count in this question? As long as I have my transportation everything else just seems to fall in place.
