In myth we believe that in the beginning, the universe is just like a great egg, and a giant named Pan Gu (盤古) sleeped in it. One day he woke up and stretched, and the great egg of universe was divided. The light objects rose up and became the sky, and the heavy object sank and became the earth. The sky was round, and the earth was square. However, the sky was too heavy even to a giant like him, and he got so tired. He fell down on the earth, and every bit of his body turned into the things we see -- his eyes the sun and the moon, his muscle the soil, his bone the mountains, etc.
One day a goddess with a human upper body and a snake tail came to the earth. Her name was Nu Wa (女媧). She used the soil to make some little dolls. Then she puffed at them, and the little dolls were alive. She named them "Ren(人, human)". Nu Wa was so happy that she used her magic to make more Ren efficiently. Soon the earth was filled with humans.
Simultaneously, Zhu Rong (祝融) the god of fire and Gong Gong (共工) the god of water had a fight, and Gong Gong lost. He rushed into one of the pillars that holds the sky, Bu Zhou Shan (不周山), trying to kill himsilf. He happened to destroy the pillar, and suddenly rains poured in without stopping. Nu Wa was so worried that Ren might not survive that she decided to melt the stones to help repairing the broken sky. However, the could not be fully repaired and became a little slope. That's why the sun, the moon and the stars all rise from the east and falls to the west, and how the universe is formed in Chinese mythology.
