Hi and welcome hehee!!

Firstly let me tell you, there are going to mmanny idiots who is going to tell you that some certain band is punk or not..All you have to do is ignore them :D

Firstly punk got its sound from fast rock n roll music. It was called PROTOPUNK-
Iggy Pop and the Stooges
New York Dolls
Television.

These band dont always have that fast and heavy type of music punk does. But if you really get into punk, youll notice that the FIRST punk bands have got influence from this bands

... Punk first started in the 1970s. The three main bands the fuelled the scene firstly.
Sex Pistols, Ramones The Clash.
During those years it was mainly British bands that fuelled the punk scene worldwide.
Buzzcocks*
The Damned
Sham 69
Generation X
X Ray Spex*
The Stranglers
The Vibrators*
999
The American scene was thriving too.
Ramones*
Patti Smith*
Blondie*

The American punk in the 70s was less harder and had a bit more melody to it.

That was the first wave of punk. It didnt last very long. Bands like The Sex Pistols broke up and the scene, espescially in UK was slowly starting to die. In america it was getting less popular.. but still the scene was more thriving than the UK.

The first wave of punk then officially died out..

In the 80s.. American college kids were getting bored of their lives and hated how the police mistreated them. They gathered in small groups, rented out a small building, started clubs then started bands themselves.
The HARDCORE PUNK scene started.. :D

The hardcore scene was mainly in the america with bands like-
Dead Kennedys
Circle Jerks
Minor Threat
The Germs
Black Flag
Bad Brains

There was a hardcore scene in UK too but not many bands were theree-
The Exploited
Crass

The hardcore punk was a very fast and heavy type of music. It was punk that had liberal and rebellious lyrics.

After the 80s.. punk was slowly starting to die away all over the world. It was officially off the agenda.

Punk wasnt popular anymore. There were hardly any clubs in the world that you could go to anymore to listen to some real music. But there were bands that saved the movement.
It was mainly californian bands that helped revive PUNK-
Green Day
Bad Religion
Beastie Boys
Blink 182
NoFX
The Vandals
Screaching Weasels

There will be some idiots who say these bands arent punk at all. But those idiots will be the one that dont know the first thing about punk. If bands like green day didnt form, punk wouldve been dead by now. during the late 80s noone knew about punk anymore. So noone funded the clubs that played punk. All the clubs were closing. When green day came in, punk was back in the agenda. and they helped open the doors for many bannds.
Green day took 3 chords and turned it into a masterpiece song- this is how they have influenced millions of people. thats what punk is about..
Green day opened the door for loads of punk bands with a melodic edge, thats why. we still have punk today.

Modern punk bands would-
blink 182
anti flag
sum 41
offspring
dropkick murphys
flogging molly
the restarts
outl4w

Ill just give you some punk classics/songs you might like

Dead Kennedys- California Uber Alles/ Police Truck/ Kill The Poor
Ramones- Blitzkrieg Bop/ California Sun/ Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue/Pet Cemetary/ Havana Affair/ I wanna be your boyfriend/Wonderful world/KKK Took My baby away/Judy is a punk/ Sheena is a punk rocker
Sex Pistols- Pretty Vacant/God Save The Queen/Anarchy in the Uk/ New York
The Clash- White Riot/ Should i stay or should i go/ Guns OF Brixton/ White man in hammersmith palais.
Green Day-Longview/One Of My Lies/Welcome To Paraidise/Sassafras Roots/Walking Contradiction/Stuck With Me/Brain Stew/Jaded/Take Back/Platypus/St Jimmy/Homecoming/I wanna be alone
Patti Smith- Rock N Roll ***.g.er/ Gloria
The Exploited- Fcuk The Usa
Blink 182- Dumpweed/ Party Song/ Josie
Sum 41- Never Wake Up/ Walking Disaster
The Damned- New Rose
X Ray Spex- Oh Bondage up yours!
Iggy Pop- Lust For Life

Soo hope that helped :D ... of course i have missed out many bands. Im just writing what i think punk is. There is definitely going to be different opinions.
But punk is something that undefinable, punk is not something you become just coz you want it, you be what you are, listen to what you listen to. and then you slowly realise you are what you are becoming.
You just have to look at what people say punk is. and come up with your opinion :D

Btw even though i think the Brits started of punk. The American Punk was more influencing and aspiring. so i definitely recommend that you check out American Punk more.

:D

Start with these albums - If you don't like them, there's something wrong with you.

Ramones (Self Titled - first album)
Bad Religion - No Control
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
Descendents - Somery (To those who will chastise me for this, I know it's a 'Greatest Hits' and not a 'real' album, but it's a damn good place to start)

I could go on for days (as other resposes have attempted to....), but listen to these albums a few times, see which stuff you like best, and go from there.

well if you want old stuff defentily the ramones every punk listener will tell you that. the misfits and black flag really good too. it also kinda depends on what type of punk you are getting into. ska kind of punk i would say rancid. um for new stuff good punk bands would be bad religion. not too much new stuff is all that great i have to admit. the old AFI is good not the new stuff. their cds from the 90s. it comes pretty close to punkish style.
