Why on earth won't the Red Sox spread out Ortiz and Ramirez. No one else is producing. There are runners left on base too many times because there is no one else. (Youklis is an exception)

I understand the 3-4-5 batting strategy. But it isn't working. Maybe there is a reason I don't know about.

You don't want baseball offense in isolation; you want it to build on each other. In other words, if you put Ortiz third and Ramirez seventh, there's a chance that both will come up with no one on base and have no one to drive in.

Splitting up the offense merely leads to runners left on base. This is more of a slo-pitch softball matter, when you have a couple of bad hitters in the lineup. But the theory is the same.

for example, say ortiz bats 4rd and manny bats 6th. if ortiz gets on with 2 outs (or even 1 out), you want your next best player behind him to drive him in. chances are, you will leave more base runners on if you spread your best hitters up. there are exceptions to this rule, but as a whole on average, that is the best way to go about a lineup. the numbers prove it on average

The accepted theory, used by all pro mgrs is that you keep them together,to protect each other. When you spread your power, you dilute it, decreasing it's effectiveness.

Empirical studies have shown that more runs score when the non-outs are bunched together. True.
