yeah, 12.
n + 8 = 20
n = 20 - 8
n = 12

Learn to guess and check your guess. This will soon lead you to how to write an equation that will gues and check for you.
Lets guess the answer is 5. Now let's check. How would we calculate a number that is 8 more than our guess of 5? Eight more than suggests ADD so let's don that,
Is 5+8 = 20?
Nope! Was our guess to big or two small? Let's guess a number a little larger like 7. Again we add 8 to 7 to check:
7+8=15. That was not enough to give 20 so again our guess was too small.
Can you see what guess would work? You could work up to one more each time trying 8,9,10,11 and finally 12 which would check:
12 + 8 = 20 so the solution is 12 since 8 more than
12 is 20.
Now of course guessing gets difficult with bigger numbers so let's replace our first guess of 5 with x
x + 8 = 20
Can you see that this says that 8 more than some number x by adding produces 20?
Now subtract 8 from both sides to solve for x and you get
x = 12 without all the guessing.
When you are not sure how to start a problem, make a guess and see if you can check it by arithmetic. Then put in x for your guess and solve the resutling equation.
That is how to teach yourself algebra.
