This site is great for supplies like filters heaterrs and other equipment that you'll need, and the prices are always lower than I find in the stores.

You're far better off to buy any materials locally when you can. The prices online are cheaper, but the companies selling it make up the cost in what they charge for shipping.

If you buy locally, there isn't as much guesswork in choosing sizes or shapes, or what's on the live rock (and I've seen pieces shipped with unwanted algaes, nuisance anemones (Aiptasia), and cyanobacteria. If you see the pieces in person you have a lot more control over what you get. The same for corals - if you buy locally, you get to see the sizes of the corals, variation in colors, and their health. The only thing you may not get is as much selection.

There's a trick to getting anything you want without having to pay the shipping costs - go to a local store once you've checked out what's available (and researched any animals you might want, their care, equipment models and sizes, etc.) and ask the manager if they can order what you want. For equipment, make it a special order, so they'll put it aside for you, but see if on liverock, or animals if they can get a little "extra" so you can have a few to choose between. Chances are if a store wants your business, and they carry marine livestock and suppies, they'll be happy to order for you.

If you do end up ordering livestock of any kind online, try to find a company that will guarantee their animals to "arrive alive". This way, you don't get stuck if there's a delay in shipping or any problems with the shipment.

I got my fish at wal-mart they have neon tetras and mixed fruit tetras and a few other colorful fish. They are cheap but aren't that healthy all the time. They are gauranteed so you can take them back and get another. their fish are around 2 to 3 bucks. That's where I got my tank but you can find some super cheap at yard sales and flea markets. you'd be surprised how many people put a lot of money into fish and decide they dont want them. A good place to get shells is in the craft aisle at wal-mart you can buy a bag of several different kinds for like 4 dollars. You can get some cute pottery and such in the decoration aisle or at the stores where everything is a dollar. My whole setup decorations and tank was probably about 100 dollars which isn't that bad because I have plants and a ton of shells.
