No, they can't do that.

First off, only the COURTS can evict you. If the landlord has good reason such as unpaid rent or violations of the lease then he can go to court and have you evicted. That typically takes 30 - 45 days or longer depending upon the reason.

Secondly, although a landlord generally can refuse to extend your tenancy once any lease is expired he must notify you IN WRITING of that fact. Additionally he must give you sufficient notice, generally at least 30 days spanning one full rental period. So, if your landlord gave you WRITTEN notice today, you'd have to be out by December 1st at the EARLIEST.

Lastly, IGNORE what a worker tells you! Even if he's the landlords agent, the notice MUST be IN WRITING. Verbal notice is worthless! Tell this clown to pound sand. They CANNOT put you out like that! Most likely you're dealing with a powerless idiot who just wants to ruin your day. Don't let the bastard do it. Tell him you'll see him in court and walk away.

Now, go sit down and have a nice glass of wine and calm your nerves. You've earned it. ;)

Addendum: Please IGNORE the poster who said you have no rights if you don't have a lease. As a former landlord myself, believe me when I say that you do have rights without a lease. Not the least of which are the right to quiet enjoyment and the right to proper notice of changes in your tenancy. That poster simply doesn't know what they are talking about, pure and simple.

I'm pretty sure they can't evict you like that. Although landlords don't have to have a reason to ask you to leave, they do have to give you a reasonable amount of time to vacate. You should check the landlord /tenant laws of your state. I live in Illinois so the law may differ, but not much. Here(in Illinois) the landlord has to take you to court before he/she can get possesion of the apartment. That process could take up to 1 to 2 months which could give you the time you need to find another apartment. Any other way could be illegal.Good Luck!!!!

you need to know how your state defines your arrangement.

If you live in the owners basement you are not considered a renter but more like a boarder.....different rules apply.

In my state as a boarder I only have to give you as much notice as you pay rent......month to month gets 30 days notice or weekly gets 7 days notice.....then I can have your removed as a trespasser.

Dont listen to anyone but the landlord and in writing.

if you have no lease I dont think that you have any real rights. You could contact your local housing athority and see they would know for sure. also try roommates.com I have heared that its good but have not ever personally used it.
