It can vary on how fast they pick things up to how much they are being taught and exposed to words. Once they start to babble they may pick up a few words like Mama, and Dada. I know a baby just turned 1 years old who says more sentences than a 4 year old. She seems advanced, while I've seen on eyear olds who can't say very much at all.
It varies, just expose them to new words and make it fun. :)

My 1st daughter said her first words at 5 months. "Kitty cat." Yep. Then two word sentences at about 8 months, 4 word sentences at 10 months "Mama, I want go shopping." and carried on long conversations at a year.

My 2nd daughter didn't say anything until after her 2nd birthday. My husband says it was because with her older sister around she couldn't get a word in edgewise. But, after she started talking she hasn't shut up since.

Be patient. Yours will talk. And like the old saying goes, we spend the first two years teaching them to walk and talk and the next 16 telling them to sit down and shut up.

Be careful what you encourage a child to do. Talking is OK to encourage. Let them crawl as long as possible. We encouraged the 1st to walk and she did at 9 months. We left the 2nd to figure it out on her own. Just make your life easy for as long as possible.

About 5 months or older maybe. My son said his first word at 5 months. His first word of course was dada.
