This will depend a lot on the type of tires equipped, your driving habits, and also, on whether the tires were properly inflated.
If you have ultra high performance tires - those which are biased towards "stickiness", traction, for high speed performance, all things being equal, you will have a lower tread life - sometimes around 20K miles. All-season tires, touring tires, etc will have a smoother ride, lower rolling resistance, and longer tread life, though at the expense of handling and high speed performance. Depending on the tire, you can drive for much longer, say 40K, 50K, 60K, and on whether you drive your car very hard or not.
In any case, your tires should be replaced if the tread is worn down to a level where it will not offer sufficient traction for safety - the legal limit is 2/32 of an inch. Another rule of thumb - use the old Lincoln's head penny test - insert a penny into the tire tread (head first) - if you can see anything above Abe's head, it's time for a new tire.
You can also look at the wear bars that will show across the tread - that's also a sign to replace the tires.

Look for the trend bar indicators. You don't say what kind of tires, size, or miles, so it is hard to say. Factory tires are known for not having long tread life.
This is the downside of the newer low profile tires, expensive, terrible in snow or slush, wear out real fast, hard ride on bad roads.
Did you rotate the tires? If not that will cut the life in half.

stick a penny in the tread with Lincolns head facing down, if you can see his face you need new tires. There are also "bars" that run across the tread, (small pieces of rubber that are normally below the tread line) if they are level with the tread then that is a good indication. There are many things that can lead to premature tire wear without seeing the tires it is tough to say but these are 2 good tests.
Tires can last from 15k to 50k miles.

if you have the sport package the tires may have been high performance which means dramatically less life i go though tires on my A6 about every 15K to 20K miles. If you don't want to change your tires that often when you replace them downgrade to something like a touring tire instead of a performance tire they will last longer but handling and driving dynamics may suffer slightly but if your just using it to got to work and back you may not even notice.
