Which was first? Rugby or Football (American)?

Rugby. Rugby was an olympic sport in the 1920's and the Americans were the best in the world at it. We can be very thankful they went their own way. They won Gold in the 1920 olympics in Antwerp and Gold in the 1924 olympics in Paris. Rugby dropped off the world stage a bit when it was dropped as an olympic sport. France had the Silver medal on both occasions.
It does need to be noted though that the All Backs were represented in neither of these olympics. But where would the Americans be today if they had continued?

Rugby dude..... been around since the mid 1800s? with rules being made up just before the games were played (I kid you not!).

Rugby was introduced to America in the late 1800s and yeh probably because they couldnt get the gist of the game - changed the rules put padding on and there you have it American football!

Well some silly mixture of the two, but since rugby makes more sense and is obviously more fun it survived. American Football probably took off in America when the Americans decided , " in your face rest of the world", "we're gonna do things our way!" (a trend which we saw once again with the whole Iraq thing)

yeah, rugby because they didn't play football the way they do now back then. They did play Rugby, though.
