I don't know the best but I can tell you that I have I have a Dell Inspiron and I don't like it. Its made from really thin cheap plastic. Not durable at all so its not good to carry around with you.

HP Pavillion is awesome except for the battery life.
I would consider Dell only if their service wasn't India based.
Try understanding "Betty" from India....LOL

alienware area-51
dell xps
sony vaio (any of the series)
hp (any of the laptops)
any ol' gateway laptop

or you can go into specifics, but then the only thing on the list would be alienware, dell, and maybe vaio

alienware for gaming, but expensive. IBM (lenovo) for the service they offer, compaq or HP for lowest price but very good quality, crappier service though, Dell is ok, gateway is going down the drain. toshiba used to be good. i am no longer familiar with them.

you said not for gameing. well any brand will do. just stay away from emachine laptops. you said school work, but did not specify what kind of school work. Gaming requires power and school work does not. so anything will do. Remember that the BEST will brake down too.
