China is nearly the same size as the U.S. and its shape is similar. There is one seacoast that lines the south and east. The coastal areas are very humid, rainy and low elevation with some mountains inland. Near the sea are many water areas of river deltas, swamps and canals. Rice and sugarcane are important crops. The most famous and rugged mountain range is Huang Shan in eastern China that is often shrouded in fog like the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina, USA.
The northeast is cool and green in summer and cold in winter with heavy snow six months of the year. Harbin city has an ice carving festival with solid block sculptures as much as 20 feet high. Wheat is an important crop so noodles are the main food rather than rice.
Inner Mongolia is at the north-central and is a vaste grassland. The people are mostly poor heardsmen raising sheep, goats, cattle and yaks.
The southwest is mountainous with many large rivers such as the Meekong and Chang Jiang (known outside China as the Yangtze).
The far west is Xizang Province which was half of Tibet before 1950. It is a cold, high plateau with scattered mountains and glaciers. The area that borders Nepal has the highest mountains on Earth.
The northwest varies a lot from east to west. It has two large desert areas, the Taklamikan Desert in the far west (Xinjiang Province) and an unnamed area in the eastern half (Gansu Province) called gobi which is a term for the type of landscape (rocky soil). Surrounding these desert areas are mountains, dry and sandy in the eastern half and green and lush in the western half. Winters are cold but dry in the eastern half but heavy snow in the western half. Wheat is the main crop and Gansu Province is the noodle capital of China with more than 20 types of noodles served in restaurants. Bread and potatoes are also common main foods while in all other areas of China potatoes are never accepted as a substitute for wheat or rice.
