I remember it like people say they remember where they were and what they were doing when President Kennedy was assasinated. I was taking lunch at a retail store I worked at and was watching my soaps, probably Y&R in the breakroom and a guy got up and turned the TV station without asking and I getting upset for his rudeness. I understood why when I saw everyone watching the Challenger explode in the air. It was played over and over again. WOW. It was so sad.

I was living in Germany at the time and listening to the broadcast of the launch on the radio. I was working in a snack bar and feeling a little irritated that my co-worker hadn't shown up yet. It was early in the evening and I knew it was late morning in Florida. I heard the announcer say that something horrible had happened but I couldn't figure out what it was. Over the next few minutes, I kept hearing about the shuttle exploding just after liftoff. I couldn't believe it. I vaguely remembered Apollo 1 and how the three astronauts had died when their capsule caught fire and they were trapped inside. I was hoping the astronauts were all right but when I viewed the footage of the explosion later on, I could see there was no way they could have survived.

I remember that day. I was in 7th grade, and during lunch people were discussing the Challenger and that it exploded. At first I thought they meant someone had blown it up. Tragic. Ron McNair ... one of the Challenger astronauts .... was from Lake City .... a small town not far from here.

I was in a local restaurant, thought about all the amazing people onboard, including Sally Ride, was stunned & sad.
I was 21 & have been skeptical of NASA since that day..

I remember that day ALL TOO WELL. It was horrid, and it still is horrid. So was the loss of the Columbia, on its way 'home' from space.
We STILL NEED TO EXPLORE SPACE, though ... especially with Global Warming, because otherwise, the people on this planet may not SURVIVE.

Who doesn't remember it, if you are of that generation. Where were you when it happened? I was in an office, doing my work, when my supervisor, who had a TV (go figure) yelled for all of us to come into her office. I cried internally, not believing what I saw. Similar to 9-ll-01...same helplessness. Powerlessness is frightening to me.
