'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' by Louis de Bernieres. Takes place in Greece during WWII. Terrible, terrible movie, but a *fantastic* book.
'Regeneration' by Pat Barker. It's about WWI. Also a wonderful book (I haven't seen the movie).
'Henry V' by William Shakespeare, about the Battle of Agincourt. Kenneth Branagh's film adaptation is the best.
'The Pianist' by W. Szpilman. Both are excellent. Focuses a little more on the Holocaust than the battles of WWII. Ditto 'Schindler's List' by Thomas Keneally.

There is a book called "The Red Badge of Courage" that I am almost certain was made into a movie. It was written by Stephen Crane and you can find it on Netflix.

"birdy" by william wharton: the book takes place in ww ii and the movie in vietnam
"the quiet american" by graham greene about the early part of the vietnam war
"dr. zhivago" by boris pasternak takes place during the russian revolution.
