Actually DEM'S are smarter than what they seem to be, they are using the Cig tax for two purposes :
1. To stick it to the Cig smoke bad habit , vision this : fat REPUKES with Cuban cigs hanging their filthy mouth?
2. Fund a badly needed money to counter the effect of big tobacco death business.

Actually, the increase in cigarette taxes has wide bi-partisan support.

While I support the concept of a sin-tax increase to assist in providing healthcare for children, there's a downside to it. As taxes increase, smoking will decrease so the revenue from the tax will also decrease. At best it's a stop-gap measure though for the moment it's better than no coverage for the kids at all.

Lee,
No I don't. I'm all in favor of children's health care, but it shouldn't be borne on the backs of one group of people who already contribute enormous amounts via their tax dollars.
WHY isn't it alcoholic beverages that are bearing the tax increases? Alcohol causes far, far more death and destruction than cigarettes. (I'm not all that likely to cause a head-on collision if I'm driving on the highway smoking a cigarette.) Well, I'll tell you why; smokers constitute only one-quarter of the U.S. population, which makes them a minority. People who consume alcohol, on the other hand, are a majority. And in U.S. politics, it's always the least-represented factions that get the boot up their collective @sses, fair or not.

Oh absolutely. Maybe higher cigarette prices will mean that fewer children will take up the filthy habit and that by itself is health care.
