It's one of those fireplaces that doesn't "need" an exhaust; supposedly it burns all of its gas. However, after being left on for a few minutes, there is an unpleasant odor in the room, and after a few minutes more, the smoke alarm, about twenty feet away, has been triggered.

Any suggestions on how to correct this problem?

Other relevant facts: It's new and hasn't been used more than an hour in total. I have a CO detector within ten feet of it, which never registers a measurable reading.

Is it new (the fireplace)? If so, it might have a sheen of oil or something on it from the manufacturer (to prevent corrosion or oxidation after manufacturing) that needs to burn off. And, the vapors it's giving off may be enough to cause your smoke alarm to detect it.

Unplug the battery from the smoke alarm. Ventilate the room well (open windows and run a fan) and run the fireplace for a while. Then see if the smell goes away and the smoke alarm doesn't go off any more. Once you get to the point where it doesn't smell funny anymore, use it as normal.

Ck to see if the logs are properly placed. They have to sit absolutely in a certain position.
