The pilot flame should be mostly a deep blue, with possibly a yellow tip. It should play on the thermocouple bulb in the bracket.

It's supposed to be blue; your gas company should be able to do a check on it to make sure it's burning correctly. Gas furnaces could emit high levels of carbon monoxide that could be fatal. I know PG&E used to offer this check up service for free; it's worth a call.
