I have four ideas for you:

1. Airbags on the outside of the car. Think about it. That would extend the crumple zones a lot. What's protecting the passengers may well be protecting the entire car by softening the impact.
I'm sure it won't be long before that comes.

2. Covered wheel wells. Keeps the risk of injury for pedestrians lower, as their limbs are less likely to make contact with wheels.

3. Global GPS, showing the positions of other cars in the vicinity. Great in the fog. But every car would need to have one to be satellite-trackable.

4. A moving, digital image of driver and passenger, projected onto the rear window, to take the anonimity out of driving, and to prevent tailgating by others. You don't tailgate when you have two live people looking right at you. Plus, it would be cool.

There are things the consumer can do today:

1. Buy harness seatbelts and have them fitted instead of the regular ones. Many injuries are brought on by the seatbelt when your body leans into it during a crash, and the more surface it has, the less likely it will harm you.

2. Roll bars.

3. Bigger brakes.

Something wired into the ignition that would automatically shut down any personal electronic devices,(cell phones, i-pods, etc) when the car was running.
