I adore it, though it's a bit too popular for me to likely use (recently rejoined the top 100). Just a personal preference. Still a wonderful choice for someone else, however! ;)
And per some of the "feminine" comments (I haven't read through them all just yet), I fail to see how a classically masculine name that has been used for centuries and is closely associated with a MALE lover of legend could possibly be considered "too girly." LOL Just because a few parents are unfamiliar with the name or simply prefer a masculine name for their daughters doesn't make it any less masculine. After all, it's a very uncommon choice for girls -- not even IN the top 1000 -- and an equally COMMON choice for boys (again, top 100)! Akin to naming a girl Romeo, if you actually think about it.
So again, it's a wonderful, strong name for any boy. :) Love it.
Edited to add: the "sad" meaning mentioned above is a false one. Some assume -- based on sound alone, NOT etymology -- that Tristan is related to the Latin "tristis," but this is completely unfounded. Tristan is a modern form of the Celtic names Drysten, meaning "riot, tumult," or Drustan, from Druce/draoi, meaning "magic, wise" or "son of the wise." It is not in any way rooted in tristis/triste.

I love the name Tristan.
It fits in with the trendy "an" names (Brayden, Caelin, etc) but it is more beautiful and has a great history to it.
In Irish legend, he was a heroic night who has a tragic love affair, much like Romeo and Juliet.
But the name itself is strong, yet cool, masculine but attractive. I really love it! It means bold, so it really implies bravery.
It's a great name!
Tristan James
or Tristan Joseph
would be adorable! :)

Tristan/Tristram was one of King Arthur's knights. His name comes from the French "triste" which means sad, and his love affair was heartbreakingly tragic.
Old line New Englanders have used the name for generations.
These days it's pretty trendy. He won't be alone with it!

I think it's really cute. And another plus is that it's not like you hear it everyday, so your child won't have to worry about sharing his name with 2 or 3 other kids in his class. Great name selection, good luck and best wishes!

I think it's alright.
Tristan James would be such a beautiful name!
I have a female neighbor named Trysten or Tristyn. I can't quite recall the spelling. I think it's the first one.
Nice.
