Legally it was an offer, but the intent clearly was to insult him and drive him away. I don't revere Torre, but I do feel sorry for the shabby treatment he got. I think he took too much crap from management and should have walked a long time ago.

Because the offer was disrespectful. It was a lower salary. Steinnie's sons said they thought the offer was appropriate, based on performance. A performance based model is what I believe they said. But if that's the case look at Torre's 12 year resume with the Yanks and not just one season. So Torre did the right thing. He should have walked soon as Steinbrenner gave him that embarrassing ultimatum. I mean he dissed Torre publicly and now Joe is supposed to grovel for his job and for less money? Heck no. I'm glad he walked and he deserves to work for an organization who won't micromanage and ask the impossible (that being to win it all EVERY year). Torre deserves to be the skipper of an organization that will respect him and not diss him publicly.

Probably tired and wants to spend time with his family. Also wouldnt be surprised if he felt it a slap in the face to take that offer. The thing that will be missed the most is the way Torre shielded the players. Who knows how many times he has taken the heat and it never was reported.

he rejected the offer because he became spoiled.

5 million on the table another 3 million in incentives and i hear people felling sorry for him? even at 5 million that is almost twice that of any other manager!
he made a big mistake and will regret it forever.

i keep hearing how much class he has.... well how about showing some class and not making it about the amount of money. take the 5 million and try to earn the other 3 million in bonus's. he got insulted by a 5 to 8 million dollars for 1 year? you gotta be kidding me!

he let his emotions get in the way of making the correct decision. he will not get a 5 to 8 million dollar contract from anyone else. he lost the greatest job any coach could have.

how smart was that? he made a huge mistake!
bad coaching decision joe... hope you are happy now!

As a diehard yankees fan how could he have taken the offer. Joe is a class act, 12 straight playoff appearances eleven straight A L East titles, four straight world series wins, bringing this club with early season injuries and an older starting pitching staff back into the playoffs, now that s not only job performance but HALL OF FAME numbers. less we forget leyland, randolph, manuel ,all got contract extensions and joe is basically shown the door.

So he might desire to turn it down too. Steinbrenner finally must be noted as to job for being a spoiled brat. He whines approximately this and complains approximately that once which, interior the midst of the sequence, places pointless tension (PUBLICALLY) on his supervisor to win in the different case. I mentioned all alongside, in the event that they circulate back and grant a settlement, that seems poorly on Steinbrenner, yet whilst Joe commonplace it, it would look poorly on the two good for Joe. it extremely is a guy with satisfaction. humorous that the Yankees have not got participant contracts based totally on overall performance and progression into the playoffs, they does no longer sign anybody.

He was sick of dealing with George.
George disrespected Torre, and I think Torre had every right to walk away.
I will miss him a lot, and the Yankees won't be the same without him.

Uh...Because the contract was for a lower base salary...Thats basically saying "you're not as good as you used to be...Take a pay cut..."

Torre deserves a little more respect than that...and this is coming from a Red Sox fan...

Because there was probaby asomething in the contract that we don't know about that he doesn't like and only 5 million for one year bet you the next guy in line gets more then 5 million a year

I think that it was only a one year contract. He also would have taken a pay cut i believe.

Who knows what else they discussed.

I think that they pretty well made it known to him that he should have done a better job this year.
