Old Mental Hospital - An abandoned mental hospital on South Alamo Street. It has been said that if you go inside there, you can hear people screaming and moaning. Doors will slam shut and creak open. If you do go there, be careful to not get caught because trespassers will be arrested. It was just abandoned when funding was cut, patients were either transferred or released.

The house is in the Rigsby Area and is unfortunately considered by most to be a higher crime/less desireable neighborhood. San Antonio, for the most part, is a safe and friendly city, but it is a large city and therefore has some areas that are better avoided. There are safe areas all around the city and nice areas scattered everywhere. There are some beautiful and historic home and wonderful areas inside Loop 410, but that would have to be considered the inner city and there are more run down areas inside the loop as well. As others have said, the areas north of Loop 410, and more so the areas between 281 and I 10 would be good bets for a nice place to stay. Check the areas out on Mapquest if you are offered addresses. Even better contact the Convention and Visitors office in San Antonio for advice.

I believe that you are talking about the old Mental Hospital on South Presa. I have tried to research it on line and was unable to find anything. So what I am going to tell you is from memory and that is a number of years ago. It was one of ten mental hospitals that were state hospitals but the state eliminated the funds and many people were turned out to the streets. No funds no hospital, this didn't just happen in Texas but across the nation. Just plain and simple LACK OF MONEY.
