My conclusion after being a huge Beatles fan all these years; there *is* no 'best' Beatles song. Too many are great.

But my fave solo Lennon tune is "#9 Dream". (followed by "Give Me Some Truth'. George's slide solo on that song burns!)

I grew up in the era of the Beatles, then I grew up. They played catchy, kiddie pop, their music is very over-rated when you think of some of the great and even just average songs there are about. I have no idea why people keep on about them, they DIDN'T change the face of music, they were just one of the many bands around at the time and it was that kind of music that made the change. And most of the other bands around had better musicians. If you were to listen to some of the other sounds that were around then, Animals, Kinks and Rolling Stones for instance with their raw sounds, Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, Them, they were all bands with an individual sound. Some of the Beatles' lyrics are absolute rubbish, the same can be said for songs written solely by McCartney and Lennon after the split. Listen to the lyrics of 'Hello, Goodbye,' what does that all mean? And that awful, slushy song of Lennon's, 'Beautiful Baby.' I will admit that I did like some of their songs, but mostly songs that were written by other people. And I do own one of their albums, 'With The Beatles.' Other than that, all that can really be said of them is that they are the most over-rated group ever.

you can't possibly pin point 'the best song' because the Beatles and John Lennon were absolute bl00dy geneises. but some great songs by the Beatles are...

Hey Jude
Sgt. Pepper's Loney Hearts Club Band
And I Love Her
Help!
Something
For No One

and John Lennon

Imagine
Jealous Guy
Working Class Hero

I love all of the Beatles songs and the best John Lennon song is (in my opinion, of course) Imagine. The piano part is really fun to play.

Beatles song: A Day In The Life, simply because it shows the two sides of the Lennon/McCartney partnership perfectly. Each took the lead vocal on the bit of the song they wrote and it shows to perfection the two contrasting styles of the two master songwriters.

Lennon solo: Jealous Guy, as, to me, it is a perfectly constructed pop song. The melody is beautiful, the chord sequences are haunting and the words are moving.
