First of all, if you had spent 2 minutes of your time to check the search bar, you would have noticed that this has been asked almost 600 times already.

So what makes your question more important than those?

You THINK a huge science discovery will happen?

Wow you are really a guru aren't you?

Perhaps you should avoid all of the pseudo 2012 websites which are presenting disinformation and fuelling your fantasies and review what John Major Jenkins has to say about the calendar. He is the only respected author on the subject. Not whatever you have been checking out.

Geoff and jeelbear are correct. Unfortunately, when you mix uneducation and fear and false information, some people will believe in anything. And that's exactly what this topic has brought to persons. Armegeddonists are ALWAYS looking for some kind of sign that the end is near. The same for religious fanatics. When people like Rebecca and Skateboy and Angel Heart hear about the end being near, it gives their lives meaning and importance instead of having to think that they will be living their boring lives for a long time to come. Suddenly, their life has a purpose- to be here when the end comes. It's not a new concept as other answerers have pointed out. But it's the latest fad. When 2012 comes and goes, there will be a new date that will herald the end of times. I don't know whether to laugh or feel disgust when I hear persons claim that a pole reversal is coming or that the Sun is going to align with the galaxy. We are truly living in sad times today when so many are misled into believing in falsehoods that are presented on a website and therefore percieved to be fact.

There are no letterheads on the top of websites stating: FICTION, SCIENTIFIC FACT, UNSUPPORTED CLAIMS, OPINION. If there were, 90% of 2012 websites would not exist.

I get so sick and tired of having to combat disinformation that I sometimes feel like letting people like Rebecca live out their gloomy depressed lives and let them just get therapy in 2013 when they notice that their world didn't end and they are stuck living with themselves until they grow old.

1- Pole reversals are in no way connected with precession. Research them for yourself and you will see through the lies.

2- The Sun is NOT aligning with the galaxy in 2012. Just as the stars and constellations move around the planet once per day AS VIEWED FROM EARTH, so also does the Milky Way band move up and down due to procession. Because of this, the Sun APPEARS to rise sometimes when the Milky Way is high in the sky and sometimes when the Milky Way is low in the sky. The Sun right now is appearing to rise when the Milky Way is low in the sky. This is not due to any kind of magical allignment. This is only a natural phenomena AS VIEWED FROM EARTH.

Very few people know what is happening in the 2012 subject. Even fewer people who THINK they know about it actually have a clue to what is real and what is fiction. Common sense is hard to find these days.

What will happen is that a lot of people who wrote about an end of the world in 2012 will have either to come up with a good explanation as to why they were wrong, or, totally ignoring their previous claims, will jump into some other lunatic story to write and sell more books to gullible people.

If the Mayas were so good at predicting the future, then they failed miserably at predicting the end of their civilization. That is rather poor predictive capability, I would say.

The Mayan calendar is actually amazingly accurate in predicting events that happen with the stars. The date in 2012 actually corresponds to the time that the earth, sun, and black hole in the center of the galaxy will align. Some scientists believe that this could possibly change the axis that the earth spins on which would have catastrophic effects. The Mayans apparently thought something big was going to happen too. I doubt that the apocalypse is coming but then again, the Mayans may have known more than we do... kinda scary isn't it

If that was true then that would def suck. Im paying all this money for tuition right now and it would be a waste if the year after I got out the whole world ended. I could be having alot more fun with that money than being in classes.
In 2012 Global Warming will prob start to effect us and Al Gore Will Laughing his *** off

I think the Mayans just ended their calendar in 2012 because they just couldn't imagine anyone being interested in anything that far out in the future.

In fact, I think that 2012 will be just as special as every other year.

In 2012 I will be 59, if I am still alive. That will be that year's major event, except for the presidential election.

Unless you are an ancient Mayan, this does not apply to you.

Same thing that happened at the "New Millenium" 2000 AD as well as in the Year of Our Lord 1000 and when we experienced the Great Alignment of the planets. People will die. Kids will be born. Etc.

Who knows. Predication's are a precarious phenomenon,
One can say it will be the end of human beings and the start of robots invasion.
However that will be inevitable, We have them now but in a menial production..Technology unfortunately will be the downfall of the human race. But it has to happen, so what will happen 2012, more of the same we are having now.

(1) War of terror: (2) Criminal activity becoming more predominant (3) teens out of control (4) Politics and Governments involvement in more criminal activity.
(and don't tell me there isn't). Other wise how do you think they are still able to carry on in what they are doing.
There has and always will be some form of criminal element in politics. Unfortunately that's life in its human form.

So MORE of the Same my dear - More of the same

Magnetic reversal. The poles will "switch"

On December 21, 2012... supposedly the Earth will align with the center of the galaxy (or something like that)

And supposedly, it will be the "new age" (Aquarius)

I'm wondering the same exact thing and this is what I find more believable than anything else that I have heard.
