My mom was born in Russia a few years before WWII. She had to delay her school because the school was closed. She started school when the war was over, she was 8 years old at the time. She says the food was scarce. For example, when her mom pilled potatoes for boiling, they saved the skins and sold them at the market to those who kept pigs (yeah, people kept pigs in the city, don't ask me how). The city was bombed every now and then. Imagine the stress of living like that.

My family was extremely fortunate because everyone had returned home. Many families were left without fathers, brothers, grandfathers. But my mom remembers how worried she was about her father.
So to answer your question, how does war affect children, it boils down to poor nutrition, lack of education, exposure to contageous deseases and extreme levels of stress with a likely loss of a parent(s).
