Most likely the magneto under the flywheel has failed. Sometimes also called a stator or pickup. This can be tested with an ohm meter. Another possibility is the ignition switch. But the mag is the most likely.

I not sure as I explain from 1973 on, but, let's hope this look the same and you see what I explain.
2 Cylinders? It be hard to say here. If it 2 cylinder find the Power Pack, it a box that have wires going to the Coils (Coils have the Spark Plug wires. You can first check the power pack with a test light and see if it getting hot when you turn on the key. Looking at the power pack there should be 8 connectors (4 on each side). On the left (I think) should be one wire from the Stator located under the Flywheel on top. It #1 then #2 and #3 below that should have wires to the coils. #4 wire should go to ground so check it not damaged, it may need a good ground to work. On the right is #5 from the ignition switch. #6 and #7 go to the Stator under the flywheel. #8 not used. Clip the test light to a good ground and touch the point to the #5 wire. The light should be off. Turn on the key and the light should light. If not the ignition switch is bad. Hope it the ignition switch, because I not sure I can explain the rest.
If it a coil I doubt it all of them, so, see if any coil fire. If, one fire then the one that not fire is bad.
If, none fire then it may be the Power Pack or Stator. I would suspect the power pack first. But, I can not promise that it. If, you can remove the flywheel, you may be able to see if the Stator damaged or burned bad somewhere.

Check the coils by placing the lead near the block and kicking it over to see if there is spark comming from the coil. If there is then you know its the spark plugs if not work backwards, ie leads coils etc

Check the points first, if they haven't been adjusted for a long time they might not be opening.
