It invaded countries and completely changed most of their original cultures
And it let its people urinate and do other stuff in its water supply.
It once used privateers (pirates that were authorized by the government) to plunder enemy ships during wars, and it encouraged its colonies, even the ones in America, to do the same
The famed London Bridge was literally falling down in the mid-20th century, so they sold it to an American, who had the entire bridge moved completely out of England
King Henry VIII beheaded two of his ex-wives, rather then divorcing them.
The over bloated monarchy wastes millions in tax dollars each year

The over bloated monarchy costs each person 60 pence per year. And does more good work then the entire diplomatic corps. And please bear in mind that the Empire also abolished and fought slavery.....built the infastructure of 1/3 of the world....created hundreds of trade routes......and was more humane then the French, Spanish, Germans or Belgians were to their empires.
On the other hand, they invented the concentration camp (Boer War), stole countries (India, Ghana, Kenya, Afghanistan, South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, America...), signed Polands autonomy away to Russia for it (Though this was after WWII...technically still an Empire), destroyed the Chinese Imperial Gardens, the Ewen Ming Ewen (Was done in response to the atrocities the Chinese committed upon British prisoners during the Taiping Rebellion....It sounds trivial but this was essentially 300 acres crammed full 2000 years of pure heritage and art, burned and looted to the ground), shot people off the front of cannons (India mutiny...although to be fair it was done on both sides) armed no end of native tribes, and generally acted like chinless wonders.

They had no right to steal anyones country, but then again find me a single spot on the planet that retains its original ancient inhabitants. Unfortunately humanity has a habit of conquest.

These days....well......Tony Blair and the Iraq War....the cash for honours scandal......spin-doctors.....Cherie Blair being repeatedly involved in fraud/suspicious monetary transfers......the upcoming EU "constitution"......Browns backing down from calling a snap election......the usual politician, cocaine, vice girl type scandal.......the list is endless.

My kind of question: here are the good factors: Brought democratic systems to its colonies Brought new technologies that were the space crafts and iPad’s of their time to the colonies Industrialised the colonies Protected the colonies from foreign invaders that were more cruel (e.g. Spanish, French, Germans, Ottomans and Russians) Brought education to the colonies Allowed the colonies to keep their own cultures in most cases Outlawed barbaric practices like the burning of Hindu Widows in India and Cannibalism Improved communication between nations (e.g. Morse code and implication of advanced radios) First Power to Abolish Slavery (1807 and 1834) Prevented Slave trading (post 1807) Brought about the world trading system Established the closest thing to world peace ‘Pax Britannica’ (1815-1914) Improved relations between other countries Improved living standards drastically for its people Prevented war between tribes with people massacring one another Destroyed dictators and more evil empires Enhanced the economies of its colonies Forged international relations from 1815 onwards Fought piracy Dismantled itself to save the world from Tyranny in WWII Tried to enhance racial tolerance between its subjects at points Spread Christianity Although being strongly intolerant. It became one of the first nations and Empires to become tolerant Allowed the native leaders to maintain power while they ran the country from behind the scenes Created amazing inventions and discovered many ancient mysteries (e.g. Tutankhamen) Fought against fascism, oppression and tyranny Began establishing equal rights for the inhabitants (1890s+) Civilised the colonies Any International or Regional problems before colonisation were dealt with by the British (although Founded modern day law system with trials etc. and the bad factors: Exploited, tortured and killed African’s in the slave trade Massacred Aborigines Massacred Irish people in 1916 when they rebelled Exceedingly racist and fascist (SOME believed Britons to be the superior/master race; sound familiar?) An Indirect but sometimes Direct cause of the Middle East crisis with Palestine and Israel and other crisis’ in Africa and India Dislocated millions of people through slavery or cheap labour using foreign hands Split tribal lands in Africa leaving the tribes mixed up Invented Concentration Camps in the Second Boer War Exploited the land conquered for profit Treated the people like children and wouldn’t give them the right to vote e.g. South Africa Racial Limitations between Whites and Blacks Exploited black people Inter-Class Prejudice Brutal to the inhabitants of colonies when they rebelled Destroyed some ancient cultures Good points: 30 Bad points: 15 The answer is there as each point made is roughly equal to the rest but people naturally view bad points as bigger to good. But in reality this shows that the Empire was by far a good thing considering that the amount of bad points is equal to 50% the amount of good points. @Kier Yes well they're all a result of British imperialism because we left them to manage themselves which they fail to do. Their governments are corrupt and spend more money on military while the people starve and let nutters like Mugabe run the country. British Imperialism was a good thing as these all happened when we left them peacefully with education, technology and health care. They're governments are just corrupt and took away the funding for these areas to advance. British Imperialism did cause the civil wars. But it was because we left them as we found them small groups killing one another. If we were still there, there would be no civil wars in those places.

The class system in England still exists on many levels. Following George Bush blindly into Iraq is still high on the list of controversial decisions today. They bought some of the same incorrect intelligence as the Americans.

The empire took over countries and established colonies and ruled by force.
It established slave trade to work sugar plantations in the Americas.
It used opium to cause the fall of China and take over Hong Kong.
Plundered countries and their people to enrich themselves.
