can anybody give me tips on improvising over a simple melondy but kepping it melodic???

Experiment with chords having the same notes of the melody line. Some work while others may sound dissonant. Dominant seventh chords may not need to match the melodic line.

Get a book on jazz guitar. Jazz music relies very heavily on improvisation and you should get a lot of good ideas from that.

learn your scales, not just major and minor, but also blues scales and pentatonic scales(used in far eastern music and some metal solos) these will help you understand the key that you are in and how to modify that key to your artistic advantage.
