If you have auditioned for a Symphony Orchestra, please tell me what it was like! What music did you have to play? Did you have to sight-read and was that hard? Were you nervous, did you make it in? Are there any tips or pointers you could give me to help with a symphony audition?

I play violin ...

Thanks!

It is VERY hard and very competitive. You have to play a solo piece to concerto standard and loads of very difficult orchestral extracts in front of an audition panel of several experienced musicians and administrators. You have to be very good to get into a modern orchestra as standards are so very high.

These auditions are very demanding and very nerve-racking. Only apply if you're good enough to hold you own with those who have spent years at music academy.

You and the panel sit down and share a beer, talk about what's happening in the sports world, and after a while you should mention that you like music and would be interested to play for them. Then ask about a picture hanging on the wall or some other interesting datum, and hope for the best.
