Fighting serves as a deterrent to aggressive behaviour in the sport and should not be taken out of the game.
Banning fighting would remove the consequences that would befall those players who choose to take liberties with their opponent's more skilled players.

I'm for fighting.
Male. 33. American.
Why? Because it is part of the game, it is entertaining, and it is sport. It doesn't hurt anything. If two men willingly want to put down and fight, then why not? They know the dangers and consquences, and they get paid to do it. Does it really teach violence to children? Hardly, because it exists within a context. Children are raised to understand that context, and they DO. I grew up on hockey back when there was always fights, and I've never hit a person or even yelled at anyone, because I know it is wrong. If someone gets paid a million bucks to play a game, and fighting is a part of that game, and it entertains people, and maybe even help prevent injuries from stick fouls (though I've never been convinced by this argument), and they want to fight, then what's wrong with it? It is completely different than "real" life.
I put forth this as further evidence that fighting in hockey is ok: wrestling, judo, boxing, karate, fencing, sumo, are all popular sports around the world. Many of them are even in the Olympics, and few people oppose them outright. So why all the backlash against hockey? Fighting is not wrong in the sports arena, so long as the opponents are willing participants within an established, legal, and regulated context.
There was a time when I started questioning the fighting in the league. One thing really made me think twice about it. ESPN went around back in the 1990s and interviewed players about whether or not fighting should be taken out of the game. Not a single player said it should, including the likes of Ray Bourque and Lady Byng winners such as Teemu Selanne and even Wayne Gretzky. If it is ok by Gretz, then it is ok by me.

I'm for fighting and not because it gets the fans going but because by allowing it back in the old days (and none of this instigator rule crap either) the players in a sense policed themselves and ugly stick fouls were almost unheard of because a guy knew if he smack someone in the mouth with his stick he was going to take a beating. Now days none of the players have respect for other players when it comes to that and I blame the influx of europeans. When some of the first europeans suited up in the NHL and were guilty of a flagrant stick foul when it came time to give them their payback they turtled and cried to the league sot hen the instigator rule came in and it got worse. I say they could have stayed home if they didn't like the rules we have over here. They should have known what they were getting into before they hopped a plane to North America.
If they want to make hockey exciting and clean they need to keep the fighting and dump the instigator rule. They also have to start enforcing the extra penalty to guys who wear visors and start fights.
I'm 47. I've seen a few thousand games and played in a few hundred.

36 year old male from the USA and I'm for fighting.
Its part of the game. I grew up watching Bobby Nystrom, Clark Gillies, Stan Johnathan, Terry O'Riely, Dave Shultz, Hound dog Kelly, Tony Twist, and Guys Wendel Clark and Gordie Howe who were not fighters per se but, weren't afraid to drop the gloves if need be
Remember the old Gordie Howe hat trick: a goal, an assist and a fight

I believe that the one aspect that remains strong and must ALWAYS remian in hockey is fighting. My famous quote is:
In the NFL, a player gets turf toe and is out for three weeks
In the NHL, a player gets a broken toe and is on the ice the next shift.
