Some people have low self esteem and for some reason they feel better about themselves by putting others and their opinions down. It's not a slight on you, it's their problem.

Because they like being right and have to be the first to have thought about it. I work with someone that will initially disagree with everything i say, talk through the scenario and come out the other end saying exactly what i have but now it is her opinion so it is ok.

It's the old human need to control and dominate. Some people are so insecure that they have to challange everything people say. They probably dont know any more than you or I do, but they cant let anyone know that. You'd like to feel sorry for a person like that, but they make that really hard.

1. it's a not-so-clever attempt at bullying?
2. they're scared, apprehensive or nervous around you, and it brings out a knee-jerk reaction?
3. you only ever discuss maths, and one of you can't count?
if 1 or 2 or something like that, the problem is theirs. Perhaps asking them the same question you asked here will help

They are your teenage child. That's why! Not positive why but I think its because they are agitated by you. They resent your authority. They resent having to be with you at that moment. They resent what they percieve as your power over them. I have never felt that way about anyone but I have had the experience with others who, though they may not hate you, resent you at that time and place. They are angry inside. It was always with my son, rarely my wife, my work crew.

What have been known as 'wind up merchants,' those who just love to wind up other people.
Quite 'Why' they do it, it's open to debate and the individual circumstances ~ possibly a simple sense of insecurity and a desire to maker another look small and so see themselves as BIG, in Control or Superior.

Maybe you are always wrong...or conversely maybe you are right and they always disagree because they are a complete idiot. Tell them you have considered the two options and decided that they are an idiot and you are not interested in their opinion in the future.

yes classify it a variety of ways -
1. they are an a-hole.
2. they are being facetious.
3. they have nothing better to do.
4. they like arguing with you because
a. they don't like you or
b. they like you a lot.
5. you have nothing correct to say, and they are just trying to correct you! (unlikely most definitely)
Do your homework on them you will figure them out. And a healthy argument never hurt anyone....give em grief!

They enjoy getting a rile out of you, because they know what to do to aggravate you. Honestly, I don't know why you'd keep talking to a person who does that, surely you figured this person out quickly enough to know that they are an idiot and to stay away from them.

Funny you ask that. My husband does that. It gets REAL annoying. I guess its because he is Narcissistic and a butt hole. My bad for not taking my time to find the right man. But don't tell him that. He will just say your wrong and he is right. LOL.
