My landlord is saying I did not pay something that I did pay 7 months ago! I can get proof through my bank but are they allowed to do this 7 months after the fact?

Probably they can do this unless there is a specific law in your state against it. Seven months is not unreasonable. Anything in 2006 after 12/31/07 would be quite unreasonable and probably would not occur since the company closed the books on 2006 long ago.

However, if there is a charge by your bank for furnishing a copy of the canceled check I think it is quite reasonable for you to notify your landlord that you are going to deduct this from your next rent check. Furnish a copy of the bank charge when you do this and write a little note so he understands what you have done. You should not be required to pay for bad accounting by your landlord.

Yes, they are allowed to do this. Simply call the bank and ask for a copy of a cancelled check. You may even find it online, depending on where you bank.
