Any book by P.D. James would be great! She writes about crime and even though you can't tell she's a she. Also any books by Sue Grafton, she's done the whole alphabet, I'm on "J is for Judgment". The detective is always the heroine in her books. Highly fun. Agatha Christie frequently had female heroines too. So that's three. Good luck.

Try some books written by Mary Higgins Clark.
Agatha Christi - Mrs. Marble
Nancy Drew (however the Nancy Drew Series was written by ghost writers).
JoHanna Lindsey has some good books with female heroine.
This is all I can think of at the moment.
Good Luck

Tamora Pierce (NOT Tamora ANN Pierce)
She has lots of collections... I would recomend Alanna quartet, The Trickster (Sequel of the Alanna quartet), The Immortals quartet
The Prophecy of the Stones by Flavia Bujor
Avalon by Rachel Roberts (Currently has a sequel)
Dealing with Dragons {Book 1 of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles}(4 book series) by Patricia C. Wrede
The City of Amber/The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPRAU (There's a last 1 but I don't know it's title)
The Claidi Journals by Tanith Lee
It really depends on what age or level of reading your talking about...
Like The Prophecy of the Stones that's more of a easier reading then Pierce (According to the size of the font)

An Unsuitable Job for a Woman by PD James. A crime novel with Cordelia Grey as the heroine.
Plus, as Lisa says - Sue Grafton has written a brilliant series of mystery books with a female PI called Kinsey Millhone.

Elizabeth Moon has written several science fiction adventure novels about a female fighting space ship captain taking on the people who killed her family. Mark & Reprisal is one.
She earlier wrote a series of books centered on a young female and her progress in the Space Force of her time and her interaction with other female officers and dealing with a rebellion. Starts with Once A Hero. These grew out of books she co-wrote with Anne McCaffery about older women (including one Sassinack where a woman lives over 200 years because she keeps being put in deep sleep as part of a rescue. Anne has done the unusual in writing with several different people, including Moon, on a series she started where the books are titled "The Ship Who ... " The first being The Ship Who Sang about damaged people who command space ships by being installed in them. They are mystery adventures in a sci-fi setting.
There is a nice set of books about a female police detective in Ft. Worth, but I don't recall if the author is female. A librarian might help you.

The James Patterson books featuring Lindsay Boxer are excellent. I think readers of both genders would appreciate these books. These books are the basis for a new tv series this season.
Also the Janet Evonovich series featuring Stephanie Plumb are hysterical. I think this series would appeal more to women. It is a series of (currently) 13 books. The first is "One for the Money", the others have similar titles.
Good reading!

Read any book by Elizabeth George. The 'main sleuth' is an aristocratic male, but there is a female officer who serves under him and whose life we get into in these books ... she's vulnerable yet strong, she's got BAD problems in her life but she still goes to work and does an excellent job. These are the BEST books to show you how a female author can portray both men and women realistically. There are other females in these books, and ALL of them seem 'real' ... although the author is an AMERICAN and the books are set in England ... they 'speak' to anyone who reads them.

Anything by Jodi Picoult. The heroes and heroines in her books aren't the traditional kind, but they are some of the best books I've ever read. Every single one has been great!
