Poverty will always exist. Even in the most advanced countries in the world poverty is never completely abolished. Whether it is because no one will help them or because they don't want to be helped, there will always be some segment of the population of any country living in poverty. You could argue that India is not taking sufficient steps to reduce poverty. But when you use words like "abolish" you sound foolish.

Define poverty. Real poverty is something no country has been able to abolish.
A better question would be....Will India, in the future, be able to pull its economy out of 3rd world status and significantly reduce its poverty?
Though India's economy has grown due to globalization, it is mostly the top 20% of the population that has benefited. Most of the population continues to be dogged by deep-seated societal problems that have persisted for centuries. These societal problems have stunted education and prevented the poor of any vision and hope for a better lifestyle. But it is precisely the accelerated growth generated by globalization that gives India it's best chance to remove these social barriers and educate it's poor.
Bottomline, it will take an entrepreneurial revolution from within to create a need for mass skilled labor inorder for India to lift itself out of the 3rd world. I believe this will happen slowly over the next 20 years.

It is not true. India is improving and for the last fifty years it has been achieved lot. It is wrong to say unable to abolish poverty. But yes rate is still not yet curtailed. But there will be oneday poverty going to be abolished. Indians are getting more and more educated and drive to get good life. So hope India will be world's top developed country. Look at Indian economy and how it has florished and look at the education and people are getting better life.

thier poverty rates are rediculous... like 50 percent in some cities live in slums...
"According to 2001 census of India, more than half of the city's population lives in slums[1], that is about 54% of the population lives in shantytowns and slums. Even though prostitution is illegal in India, Mumbai has a large population of sex workers, estimated to number more than 100,000.[37] High HIV prevalence among the female sex-workers (consistently above 50% since 1993[38][39]), contributes to the spread of AIDS in the region and the country."

and the numbers are so large, it's hard to get a grip on the problem

To say that they are unable to abolish poverty is inaccurate. They havent been able to yet, but that doesnt mean they will fail forever.

Well u have to take into consideration the Caste system there, those who are born poor and into the lowest castes are accepted as such due to their karma, this is their reincarnation. Most don't think they have the right to change that, it's THEIR karma, in other words.
So there is that on top of everything else.

Read up on class structure and you'll understand why.... For example, some people in india are only allowed to eat rats. Not because they're poor (although they are) but because of the hierarchy....
