FFXI has been out for a few years now and has a solid online community. There have been several expansions already released. The monthly fee is pretty reasonable; the last time I played I think it was $15/month or something close to it.
It doesn't have quite the customization or detail of WoW but it's a fun RPG that will keep you interested.

There has already been a Final Fantasy MMO. It's Final Fantasy XI, and it was released for the PS2, PC, & XBox 360. There is also a monthly charge to play, similar to World of Warcraft.

The monthly fee is $12/month for an account with one character, and an additional $1/month per extra character. Considering you can swap classes pretty much at will (You level classes on a character, not the character itself), the only reason you'd want extra characters is for racial bonuses that might help one class more than another.
