Places like coffee shops and pretty much every airport has wireless hot spots for people to connect wirelessly to internet from their laptops or handhelds. I dont know about coffee shops but im pretty sure airports are free. But yeh your wireless router will only work within your house. It's best to have it protected with a password or people can hack into your connection and use up all of your internet right outside your house. Sometimes even your next door neighbour.
