Wow. It's a shame it actually came down to that. OK giving birth control may avoid pregnancy, but what about STDs?? It's difficult enough to get teenaged boys to wear condoms. I guess Sex Education and STD awareness isn't enough? Forget about abstinence, that's not even a consideration, I don't think it ever was. Is birth control even safe for girls as young as 11?? Certainly raises the question "When do I talk to my child about Sex?" It must be difficult, because a parents' child at the age of around 10, is young, and they wonder if thier child's peers are talking about sex, or worse, already having sex?? And isn't that illegal for schools to give children prescribed medicine without any parent concent?? It should be. This is just ludicrious!
Sighs babies having babies.

Note this from the article:
This week, the health center asked the committee to make birth-control pills available to high school-aged students who were still in middle school and unable to access the contraception available at the high school, said Portland School Committee member Robert O'Brien.
So we're really just talking about people who have been held back (academically) but not held back (wacka-chicka-wacka-ly).

It' amazing to me that this school district finds it necessary to give "babies" birth control......I know that this is a different world and kids are having sex earlier, but I feel by just giving birth control pills it really doesn't address the issue. It gives these "kids" a false sense of security....... Also, what are the long term effects to the "kids" if they start taking these pills? I hate it when the Government tries to "step in" and control our rights!! What's next? If the nurse had concerns she should have just "CALLED the PARENTS".....These are "kids" and NOT ADULTS!!!!

I don't think that's such a good idea, because of the kids' ages. Its only going to encourage them to keep having sex. Pretty soon the school will have students who are either pregnant, have STDs, or both. The school, I think, is making a big mistake.

That's just ridiculous. There a real medical issues that are involved for anyone taking birth control. A school giving it out is not only foolish, it's downright dangerous.

its crazy 11 years old, and they aren't even asking for medical background because if some one dose use it, they might not have a good reaction because some people have to get it as a perception and talk to a doctor bout it, they don't even have the parents approval

It's irresponsible. Not because it condones sex, but because many birthcontrols can react bad in certain people, and even result in death.
