A colander has holes in it.
It works great when washing dried red beans
before setting out to soak.
Then when you get ready to cook them,
use the colander to drain off all the water.
I've even used a colander when,
we went to Deming, NM,
to sift through the dirt,
looking for that perfect piece
of adventurine, it works really well.
