first off, i find it *appalling* that some people are calling 11 yr olds names here, regardless of whether they have sex or not, they are CHILDREN still, and deserve guidance, not insults.
anyway, birth control has been the cause of teen abortion & birth rates going down, so i think it's better than THAT alternative! 11 is young though...
i think they should be providing condoms, too (not necessarily to the *11 yr olds*, though). what about std's that can ruin a person's life? pregnancy isn't the only danger.
but i ALSO think they should discourage children from engaging in such behavior. not only are there physical dangers, but also emotional ones. kids aren't ready for that kind of activity.
but some *will* still have sex, and they should be encouraged to protect themselves responsibly.
***EDIT: i also want to mention that not all kids have good parents, and the ones MOST likely to engage in sexual activity and get pregnant are the ones who have "absentee" parents. [was a TA for 5 & 6th graders, knew their home-life situations, and overheard what the kids talked about durig recess. there were certainly some kids that would benefit from some form of birth control--and they were the ones from troubled homes.]

show me a link stating this as fact.
EDIT: ok, so here is a quote from the article you linked:
"Students would need parental permission to use the city-run health center in the school, but they wouldn't have to tell them they were seeking birth control."
maybe mom and dad should take a proactive role in their child's life and say, "Honey, why are you going to the health clinic at school?"
honestly, while i think it's sad that children this young are sexually active, it's going to happen with or without protection. hopefully, if you do your job as a parent, your child will come to you first, but if they don't you should be grateful that there is a service like this. there is something worse than a sexually active 11 year old: A PREGNANT 11 year old.

Yes. I knew a girl when I was 13 who was on the pill. Long story, but what eventually came out was her Step-Dad was raping/molesting her. He told her if she told her Mom he would kill them both. If she would have gotten pregnant she said she would have committed suicide.
Obviously, being on the pill is something parents would like to know about, as well if someone was molesting your child. But, this is not a perfect world and people do keep secrets. I would rather kids take necessary precautions if they're going to have sex. Abstinence is not realistic, thus the need for birth control once a sexually active person hits puberty.

My younger daughter just turned 14 and I would be livid if I found out that she got birth control pills without my consent! I have two daughters ages 19 and 14, they know that they can tell me anything. When my older daughter was 17 she began dating a boy seriously and that is when I made sure she was on the pill and using condoms. 11 year old girls need to be taught abstinence not birth control...

Well, look at it this way - while we both agree that this girl is much too young to be having sex, at least she is taking the precaution of protecting herself...
Whats worse? A sexually active 11 year old who is safe and clean, or a sexually active 11 year old who is carrying syphillis and a fetus?!?!

Well, it depends. Why woud you NEED birth control?? 11 year old should NOT be having sex. If you don't really NEED birth control, but you are just taking it incase, there is nothing wrong with that. So you could tell your parents, but you don't have to. But if you have been having sex, you really need to tell your parents. That is not normal. You need to wait until you are AT LEAST 20 years old to do that. But you could probably take birth control then incase because you never know.

It's totally horrid! What in the world is a girl of 11 years doing to her body and mind? No child is emotionally ready to engage in sex that young!
I blame the schools

no its not okay for 11 year olds to get birth control- especially without consent from a parent/guardian.
thats just sick.

yes, i don't agree with 11yr olds having sex, but they do, and if they are gonna do it its better that there safe about it, if they needed parents permission then they wouldn't get it and there would be more unnecessary pregnancy's then there already are
