As others have suggested, it comes into English as "angel", but the literal meaning of the Greek word is "messenger".

The special use for heavenly beings we call "angels" comes from the fact that this was the word used for God's heavenly messengers in the Greek Scriptures (first to translate the Hebrew name for these beings --mal'ak, which likewise means "messenger"-- then later in the Greek New Testament).

Note that the root "angel" (looks like aggel- in Greek) also appears in "evangel" and "evangelist" (meaning "good news" and "messenger of good (news)" and related words (evangelism, evangelical).
