We are a family of 4, and every other weekend we get my boyfriend's kids (2more). I try not to spend more than 300-350 a month, because we just bought a house and are tight on budget. A good thing to do is to run trough your fridge and pantry BEFORE you go grocery shopping, sometimes we buy more of the stuff we already have.
Also, if you still have food at home that you can cook, even if it is Pasta, count on that and do not buy groceries until the fridge is almost empty. Many products go unused, for many reasons, if there is anything left, anything will be eaten (this is specially true with kids).

Okay, now take out your bill once again, and itemize only the food products. I know you can buy a lot of things in a grocery store or where ever you shop that are not food.

Mine is $ 55.00 weekly, me alone, and I am a diabetic, this is for household products as well, even shampoo and lotions, Tums, Baby Aspirin and Gaviscon.
Can't believe that in 1960, income was $40.00 a week, rent was $10.00 a week, groceries were $9.00 a week and electrcity was $9.00 a month.
