They need both....A sun loving plant likes 10 to 12 hours a day..or can use artificial light like i grow my herbs in when winter comes..and then you have plants that like partial sun and partial shade..but they need bot light and dark..As with my herbs..I give them 12 hours of flourescent light..then turn it off at night for they need darkness too..

Plants grow better in the light. But some fruits, like tomatoes, actually do their ripening at night. That's why you can take some fruits, put them into a paper bag, and stick them into a cabinet to ripen.

Light is needed for plants to carry out Photosynthesis.

Also, the myth about speaking to your plants to help them grow isn't totally ridiculous. Plants need Carbon Dioxide, and when you breath out, the main constituent of your breath is Carbon Dioxide :)

plants get their energy through the process of photosynthesis. this requires 3 things CO2 (carbon dioxide) water and light

seeing as light is needed for their energy, and they can only grow by using this energy. it stands to reason that light would be better for plant growth
