1975.

Were you even alive then?

Were you asked if you wanted to be British?

Did you have a say in how many toes you have?

Are you assuming a right you never had anyway?

Brave boy...nice thumb!

We were asked in a referendum in the mid70s if we wanted to remain in the Common Market. By that stage, at the insistence of the Europeans, we had destroyed all our previous trading links with the rest of the world (the Commonwealth and the US in particular) and it would have been economic suicide to withdraw so it was almost a foregone conclusion that we would vote to remain within the Common Market even though it was hugely unpopular beacuse of the CAP etc.. What we have never been asked is if we wish to be part of the European Union (not a trading bloc but a political union). No-one ever voted for this and I'm sure the vast majority of the British people, while reluctantly accepting the necessity for economic cooperation, would reject a political union given the chance - which of course is the very reason why we won't be.

Have a look at this link. It appears that Labour promised a referendum on the Common Market if they got into power 1975 so the referendum was actually held to ask if we wanted to stay in. I don't really remember much about it, but I remember that it wasn't a case of one party wanting us in and one wanted us out. The parties seemed to be split down the middle.

I can't remember being asked if we should go into the common market. I do know it was Edward Heath who took us in. Then there was a vote years later asking if we wonted to stay in. I remember voting no, most people I spoke to also voted no. But we were kept in and now we have to put up with the crap that Edward Heath and his cronies got us in to.

Yes we were but the important thing to note is we voted to join or remain in the "Common Market" not a European Union.
We never did give our consent to join a European Union or have laws enacted by a parliament or commission based overseas.
The whole development of the EU has taken place with total disregard to the wishes of the British people by politicians more interested in feathering their own nests than working on behalf of the citizens of the UK.

Yes but it was a fait accompli - we were as good as in when we voted and it was after we had been swamped with propaganda to say yes. The vote was 2 -1 in favour but I voted no, since I knew it was a political move rather than an economic one.
Later - Peter Hain has just told you on Question Time "We were already in at the time of the referendum" 23.30

I remember it being talked about only I was 17 and wasn't interested as I didn't have a vote. I haven't a lot of interest in politics as they are all the same full of broken promises.

There was a big kaffuffle and eventually a referendum was allowed I think in 76. Obviously we went in and ever since have been screaming for another because at the time Bussels hadnt been included in any maps yet !

I can remember it and I voted. At the time I really thought it was the best thing for the country.everything would be the same price, no passports within the union. etc etc etc. I soon realized how wrong and so many of us were.
