I'm of Cuban descent, but in the United States I have to mark Hispanic in the race list.

I'm white though in appearance, as a matter of fact my Grandpa if you saw him which is Cuban has blonde hair, blue eyes and is pale white. He is from Irish descent, but since he is Cuban he has to mark Hispanic.

I'm white myself too, but I have to mark Hispanic because I'm Cuban. I have a friend who is Italian and is darker skinned then me, but he can mark White on his race sheets and I have to put Hispanic even though I'm whiter then him.

So why are Hispanics not considered White in the US?

First of all, your grandfather's form isn't the one you're marking. The whiteness of your grandfather doesn't determine your race. This is a weird "Hispanic" belief system that you have to drop here in the USA. You are not the race of your father's lineage. You are the combined race of all your ancestors and usually the darkest. Hispanic is supposed to mean Spanish. But it doesn't. It really just means Spanish is your language and you could be any race with a Spanish language or that was Latinized in some way. It's a stupid stupid classification. They just don't have room for all the thousands of different types of people from different countries so they came up with a lame catch all. Cuban sounds like an ethnic group or nationality not a race. Unless ALL of your ancestors are white, you aren't white. That isn't just an American belief. It's just the way the world is. White isn't a flexible classification. It's an "either-or" question. Either you are all white or you're mixed. So what is your mix? Look it up to see if they already have a racial category and a club for it online. Chances are though, you're what's considered "Mestizo" or simply a latinized mix usually of native American Indian, Latin, and something else. Here, unfortunately, Mestizo's are called "Hispanic". Time for a change, right?

Spaniards are a ecu human beings & is a factor of the Latin custom as are France ,Italy , Switzerland , Belgium , Portugal & Romania. they do no longer seem to be in any respect Hispanic or Latinos..those words are used in simple terms for South individuals.

wow.. well my boyfriend is cuban he is tan skinned and has black hair he goes by hispanic.. his dad is the same appearance but his brothers are fair skinned with black or brown hair and light eyes.. and they go by cuban/hispanic too.
you are white, just because you speak spanish doesn't mean that you are not. there are blacks that speak spanish, and i know you know that, since you're from cuba.

I don't know, but black hispanics (like Afro-cubans, brazilians) have to mark hispanic instead of black on a form too

You may mark whatever you wish for race! If you consider yourself Caucasian, mark it so (or white if they don't list Caucasian.) It's YOUR choice!

It's only used for statistical purposes so it generally doesn't matter what you put down. I like to put down "various" if given that option as my heritage is all over the chart, even though I "look" white. ;)

Hispanic isn't a race and those forms usually have "other" as a choice, so either choose "white" or "other" and quit-ur-bitchin.

Because Americans are nonsensical when it comes to race. You're white everywhere else in the world (including Europe) but not here. It's self-identification so identify yourself however you please.

"Hispanic" is not a proper racial categorization.
I sympathize with your frustration.
