What's the general etiquette for a gay bar? eg What do I wear, how "open" can I be? I haven't been to one before.

(yes I am gay)

Dress seasonal and depending on the bar casual or dress up. In the summer I wear daisy duke cut off shorts and a tank top. In the fall and winter, it's jeans and a sweatshirt. I leave my coat in the car. I frequent a casual bar.
As far as being open, just be friendly, smile a lot, people gravitate towards positive energy. Someone will approach you. Make friends with the bartender. They usually know all the regulars. When in a conversation, don't be too chatty, listen and learn. If you can dance, that's a plus, if you can't, take some lessons. Be alert for body language, someone will be attracted to you, catch it and be nice to them. Watch out for drunks that will just fall all over you. Try to avoid them if possible. It is not unusual for guys to get acquainted and kiss and embrace. When going back, and you see a guy you met before and clicked with, hug and kiss, just a little peck, nothing elaborate. Above all, don't drink a lot of alcohol. Stay sober and have condoms and lube handy. Good luck.

I remember when I was 21 and I first went to a local gay bar. It was a corner bar, much like a straight bar, but had mostly gay customers.
I was scared to go in. As I entered, two lesbians were coming out and I asked if this was a gay bar, and they said, "Duh."
So, if you are a man, young, and attractive, expect other men to be ALL OVER YOU your first time in. During your first visit, go in, have only ONE drink, and leave in less than an hour.
Wait a week or two, and go back again. You'll know what to expect. There are many good times to be had at the gay bar.
If you are going to a crowded club, I would wear fashionable, expensive clothing, sexy cologne, tight jeans, some bling. Be prepared to take your shirt off as the night progresses.
If you are going into a corner bar, jeans and a tee shirt will do.
I'm gay, so I can't speak for a lesbian experience, but some lesbians can be as sexually aggressive as gay men. Be ready to have girls all over you. In most gay clubs, the lesbians have their own night, or they go early and leave before the crowds of gay men arrive. Corner bars are usually 60% lesbian and 40% gay men. Dress how you want.

As far as being "open", it depends on the bar's policy. I've been to gay clubs where the owner doesn't permit the gays to even kiss, and I've been to gay bars where the gays are having sex on the tables and the lesbians are having sex on the dance floor. After 2am, pretty much most bars/clubs will have after hours orgies for those that are friends with the owner.

I miss the gay bar scene. My boyfriend (who I met at a gay bar) hates bars/clubs and won't go out and doesn't want me going alone, so we haven't been out for 6 months to a bar/club.

Dress comfortable, jeans and a tee, as long as both are spotlessly clean. If you do drink take it slow, if it's a "gay bar" do not stand there in shock if someone is way out there. Drinkers normally have less control and let their inhibitions run wild. Hope you dance, if you don't, believe me someone will be willing to teach you. When you first get there sit back and watch for a few minutes. If someone says hi, say hi back. If you are going with someone, take your cues from him. The main thing is have a good time and be sure if your drinking you have a designated driver or are taking a cab. It would be horrid to have an accident or get a DUI on your first trip. Not that it would be good anytime. Have Fun

Wear what ever you like - some places are more dressy some are casual.

You can be as open as you feel comfortable being.

Don't assume everyone there is gay.

There may be people in all manner of dress (leather men, drag queens, preppy guys, jocks) respect them just as you would hope they respect you, they are they for acceptance also.

Tip your bartender.

And above all else be careful entering and exiting the building, be aware of your surroundings. There are still people who wish to do you harm.

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.........

DANCE

It depends on the bar. Some are very "normal" with a regular dress code, other cater to a "leather" crowd, others to trans gender, but, hey, you got cash, you get in.

Imagine going to a place that you can wear whatever you want to wear w/o being judged. Imagine a place where you can be as "out" or "in" as you want to be and still be accepted.

That that in to consideration when getting ready to go to the bar.

Have FUN!!!
