Since you are traveling and don't want to haul back (or ship back) oodles of *stuff*, ask family members to
give monetary gifts toward a college account or give gift cards that can be used once you are back in the states.
At 10 months old your baby is not going to care if she gets 1 present or 20. The wrapping paper, the action of opening presents will give her great thrill so make sure you wrap gently so she can do it herself. Even empty boxes will bring joy to the child and give the opportunity for great pictures.
If this were my baby, I would buy 1 special & age appropriate toy from the place you are visiting. Something that you can later tell your baby "This is from your first Christmas when we were in _where-ever you are going___.
It's never to early to impress upon your child that it's not about the loads of gifts, or price of the gift, it's about the love and thought that went into it. Trust me, my daughter is 6 and she wants everything she sees, I wish I had been more frugal.
Good luck and have a happy holiday :)

Oh dear - have been there and done that. For a start at 10 months old Christmas is just another day to your baby and I would suggest you try and keep it that way, although it will be difficult with adoring relatives around who want to spoil your baby something rotten. However, set out some ground rules. You don't want your baby's normal routine interrupted, you don't want your child's food to be any different from his/her normal diet. As for presents ask for common sense i.e. small items that don't weigh much, or you could open a savings account for your little one and ask that relatives donate cash to put into that account. That means all you come home with is happy memories, one or two light fluffy toys and money in the bank for your baby that you can hang onto until your baby really needs something special.

Things that make a noise and you will be suprised that if you buy expensive things they will have far more fun with the box.

Typical child story:

Over 30 years ago my son was bought a big plastic lorry. The box lasted almost a week before the lorry caught his attention. Within a very short time it was reduced to just the load part of the lorry. It has ben used as a ramp, a store, a ship, a baby's cot (for my daughter) and more. The only reason my grandson has not played with it is that it is up in the loft and I can not be bothered trying to find it

I would get her a few things for under the tree, perhaps a couple of board books w/sound (babies that age love those!!!) and I'd also let her unwrap all of your presents for you. That's they're favorite part. They usually dont' care too much at 10 months old whats actually inside. As far as what the relatives to give her, ask them to give you gift cards so you don't have to lug things back with you....and if they absolutely must buy something, ask them to ship it to your home address. Good luck and Merry Christmas!!

I bought a push trolley with blocks in it for my daughters first christmas (she turned 1 a few days before christmas). Everyone else went mad and bought all these toys tht she couldnt use. It was madness. Get your relatives to give you money and put it in a bank account or trust fund as babies dont really need a lot until they're 3 or 4. Or get them to buy charity gifts or buy a present each for a childrens home and deliver it before Christmas.

your time! she has no comprehension of christmas or presents or anything along those lines at her age. she will most likely enjoy spending time with you and some family. take her to see all the bright colourd lights. my son still loves the lights and decorations more than anything else for christmas. He's 4 now. save your cash for when she's bigger... get her a new toy, just a small one maybe a teddy or something. she can then play with it. if she has loads of new things, she'll be trying to play while you try to get her open more and she'll be coonfused as to why she cant play.

as it is her first xmas and she wont really know anything bout it id suggest getting her things she needs like clothes for the next size up etc if she is lucky enough not to need anything why not name a star or adopt a dolphin i know she wont really understand this but if you did go with the dolphin idea it would be like they were growing together if you know what i mean. after all 1st xmases are special so y not make it extra special so you have a story about it to tell her when she is older. good luck with it and hope you have a wonderful 1st xmas together!

From personal experience. Don't go mad!!!!! We did. Now most of his baby toys are cluttering up the cellar. Not being a cheapskate or anything, but mine enjoyed ripping the paper off more than his toys. Wrap some boxes up( empty) and let the fun begin.
