The cost would be 5*([x*y]*9). So, 45xy.

Area = X x Y = XY
1 square yard costs 9 x $5 = $45
X = XY/X
Cost = XY x $45
= XY/X x $45
+ X x $45/X
so do i get the 10 points?

I hate to pop your balloon, but you didn't give enough info. I am sure this was supposed to be a simple math formula, but since i own a carpet store I will tell you there are too many variables to answer this question. The cost of the carpet is only part of the cost of carpeting the room, no matter how many x'x and y's you throw in. Have fun though.

Dude! Your question doesn't make sense! You can't answer in terms of x only, you gotta answer in xy. And are you the one carpeting the room (take labor into account)?

If you're just getting the cost of the carpet material necessary, then it's 45xy.
