My daughter has a small sized head, and hers was just under 17 inches at 9 months. Maybe your boy's is just shaped a little different so that the measurement says it's big but it's just around that area? Who cares, really, anyways. I'm sure you'll love him whether his head is huge or tiny!

Baby Boy Head Circumference

This is the CDCs official chart on it, which is what is mainly used in the US:
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhanes/growthcharts/set1clinical/cj41l019.pdf

The 5th percentile for 9 months is just under 17"
The 50th percentile is about 17 3/4"
The 95th percentile is about 18 3/4"

However that of course isn't the whole story, the question is how big is the rest of him.

If he weighs more than the average 9 month old of course his head would have to be bigger to fit. There is also to possibility that the measurement is wrong. My son was once weighed and measured 3 times in one day (don't ask) and one of the docs decided to measure him from the top of his head to the tips of his outstretched toes, well obviously that added 4" or so. This particular doc then told me my son didn't weigh enough *sigh*.

I can't even begin to tell you how many doctors I have fired.

If your son is high on the charts on all counts (height/weight as well) your son's head isn't going to look big.

Its the kids with a head circumferenac ein teh 80% and a body/weight percentile in the 20% that look like they have big heads.

Your kid is probably very proportionate so he looks okay. No worries.

Maybe the nurse measured wrong because when I look at a tape measure 19" around it looks pretty big to me.

My daughters head was like 18.5" at 15 months and I feel like she has a pretty good size coconut.
