There are lots of different crimes that are felonies (armed robbery, rape, and murder are just a few). There are a lot of jobs you can't get with a felony record, but some places will still hire you with a felony (some industrial type jobs and others).

In general, a felony is a crime that is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for one year or more. A misdemeanor is a crime that is punishable by incarceration in the county jail for one year or less.
It is important to remember that this is a general statement because many states have played around with this traditional time period. There are a few felonies in Oklahoma that are punishable for 0 to 1 year in jail or 1 year to more than 1 year in the state prison. In Kansas your 3rd and subsequent DUI conviction is a felony, but it is only punishable by incarceration in the county jail for up to one year. But there are very few of these exceptions.
The state legislature determines what crimes will be a felony and what crimes will be a misdemeanor. It is impossible to answer you question what crime did a a person that says they have a felony commit because it could be one a many, many different crimes.
There are certain jobs that usually are in government or require a professional license that you barred from if you have a felony conviction. Any employer can decide for themselves whether to bar a felon from employment or not.

Felonies are the worst crimes, whereas misdemeanors are less serious.
Robberies, larcenies, and burglaries where the item(s) stolen are worth a lot of money are felonies.
Rapes, Murders, Assaults with deadly weapons are also felonies.
Espionage (spying) is a felony.
Contrast this with shoplifting a $10 steak from a grocery store -- that's a misdemeanor, not a felony. Hitting someone with your fist and causing only a bruise is assault, but not felony assault. Killing someone by negligence (preventable accident) is called manslaughter, not murder, and is sometimes only a misdemeanor.
Because they are the worst kinds of crimes, the punishments are the most severe and certain rights may be taken away from felons. Employers do not want to take risks with ex-felons, which is why it is difficult for them to get jobs.
If you were an employer and there were 2 people who wanted one job you were offering -- both of them equally qualified, and one of them is a convicted felon (out of prison), which one would you pick?

a felony will limit your job opportunities but not stop you from having one. A felon loses some of the right that the rest of us have like the right to bare arms, landlords can discriminate against a felon, felons do not have the right to vote. one thing is for sure it will always show up on a background check so be upfront about it and that will be better then losing the job for lying. you can get a felony for violence drugs driving etc,

A felony is any crime whose punishment can include incarceration for over a year. It could be anything -- bogus checks, assault, embezzlement, murder, video piracy.
There are some jobs that are not available to felons. Employers have the right to consider a criminal background of a job applicant.
