They made him an offer they knew he'd refuse. This makes it MUCH easier for them to explain him not being their manager next year.

I am sorry to see Joe go, but I was very proud of him for leaving on his own. It was an insult to offer him the job at such a pay cut, (especially with all the junk that you have to put up with from Steinbrenner) Joe Torre did really good for the Yankees and it is their loss. He definitely comes out of this looking like the good guy he is, and Steinbrenner as the cold hearted businessman.

If you went to any of the other 29 team owners and said to them, " how happy would you be with your manager if he took your team to the playoffs 12 consecutive years, to the world series 6 of those years, and 4 world series wins" I would venture to guess that every one of them would have a smile from ear-to-ear and would be looking to extend his contract. Now comes Steinbrenner, probably someone who never played nicely with the other kids on the block when he was growing up and would never think of letting anyone play with his toys. There is always one in a crowd and Steinbrenner is that one out of thirty. Always the class act Torre did exactly the right thing.

I don't think it was the money, I think it was strickley because it was for 1 year, and the Yankees knew that. I think if they offered him 10 million under the same terms he would have declined. A 1 year contract puts him in a no win situation, and he knew that and it was a way for the Yankees trying to save face, by not outright saying we don't want you, they knew he wouldn't take a one year deal no matter what dollar amount they offered.
I'm a huge Yankees fan, I've been for 35 years, and as much as I wanted him to stay, I'm glad he didn't accept that deal, I would have lost respect for him if he did. And it wasn't because of the money, it was because it was a 1 year deal. If they offered him 2 years regardless of the momey, even it is was for allot less, I think he would have taken it. And I tell you I'm hoping, because of what the Yankees did today, Mariano, Posada and Petite tell the Yankees they will go else where even for less money to do to the Yankees what the Yankees did to Torre today. For the first time I'm ashamed to root for the Yanks.

I thought they should have offered him the 7 million plus bonus for playoffs and world series. I didn't think they would really try to bring him back anyways. I think that George used these meetings to give hope to fans that Torre would come back. I think that George would have accepted if he was in on the meetings rather than going one day when they have been meeting this whole week. I think that Torre will call it quits if George doesn't decide to pay Torre an extra 2 million. Look for Giradi or Mattingly to take over if George doesn't get a lil spark in his old brain.

Absolutely good for Torre...........The Yankee management yanked him around, to me, in a worse way than any other manager before him including Billy Martin.......To do what they did during the playoffs was, I'm sure, a big blow to Joe and the team..........I really don't think it had a thing to do with money..........I think it was Joe's pride and I think his pride, in this case, is not ill placed...........I'll never give up on my Yankees and will remain a diehard Yankee fan for all the rest of my days but that doesn't mean I have the slightest respect for the Steinbrenners or what they've done.............They're owners with loads of money and absolutely no class........CAT

Joe Torre did the right thing and I'm not even a Yankees fan. It was a principle of the matter. The Yankees strung him out and tried to make him the bad guy and then they lowballed him. If they didn't want to brign him back they should have just said so from the beginning instead of doing things the way they did it. They should have just went ahead and told Torre that they were finished with him instead of telling him that and then making him think that they might bring him back.

It was a one year deal after the team got another first round exit in the playoffs. I think it's better for both sides that Joe isn't coming back. When you're not producing, you're not going to get the big bucks like you did before. Steinbrenner worked in bonuses where Torre could make more if the team did well in the playoffs. Not unfair at all.

the whole thing is a farce. a setup. the Yankee brass knew JT would say no. the front office simply does not want the new york media to go bezerk by directly getting rid of JT which is what the bigwigs really wanted. but guess what_ the media is gonna go bezerk anyway _ that's life in the Big Apple

I agree. This was the Yankees' way of actually "firing" Torre; they made him an offer they knew he would turn down. Steinbrenner somehow thinks this makes him look like he's not the bad guy, and not really firing Torre. But he's only fooling himself.

Frankly, I am happy and relieved for Joe. He's got oodles of money, the respect and love of nearly everyone in the sports world and will stroll into the Hall of Fame some day soon, and gets to keep his dignity intact, to boot!
Thanks for everything Giuseppe!
