I don't think he is greedy. I feel he is being disrespected, by being threatened during the playoffs about his job. I think that the whole situation where they had the meetings not with Torre, affected the deal going through as well. I think that the Yankees just offered him that money to try and make the fans happy, hoping Joe will accept so the fans won't turn on the Yankees. Many people knew that Torre was probably out after this year after the rumors started. To me, it isn't the deal with the money, it is the amount of disrespect that Steinbruiner has showed Torre in the past couple of weeks.

It should have never come to Joe coming hat in hand and literally waiting outside a room as his fate was being decided. This has as much to do with the inner-turmoil of the club - who is running the organization with The Boss in declining health - as it is about Torre.
I strongly feel an old guard wanted Torre gone and the new generation - Hank and Hal Steinbrenner - have not been able to consolidate power to rehire him.....so, the compromise was for Torre to dangle for yet another season.
Bottom line is if Tony La Russa tooks the Yankees job, Torre could move to St. Louis and manage in a city where he had great success as a player.

I know exactly why he turned it down. It's not because he is greedy. It's not because he wanted more money. I believe he did this to get back at Steinbrenner. The Boss has been treating him like crap recently and I don't believe Torre felt like putting up with it some more. For all the Division Titles, Playoff Appearences, and World Series Rings Torre has won for us, Steinbrenner decides to play around with him and threaten him during the playoff series against the Tribe. If I were in Torre's boots, I would have done the same thing. He was smart to turn down the offer and to keep one of the most important things a person can have -- PRIDE.

There is a PRINCIPLE here and Joe Torre---ALWAYS the class act---if he is truly gone and truly turned down $5 MILLION, he just showed that it is NOT a matter of MONEY... Joe doesn't actually NEED the money---but dealing with George Steinbrenner has to be an almost iMPOSSIBLE task and maybe Joe decided that he had just had enough of the BS out of George's mouth.... I feel bad for the Yankees because I'm sure George will once AGAIN find out he made a big mistake not giving Joe a longer contract... George is not always the smartest card in the deck---MOST Yankee fans are STILL very upset at what he did to BERNIE WILLIAMS... we won't forget THIS either!!!! Good Luck Joe it has been a GREAT 12 YEARS and I for one will miss you heading the Yankees VERY VERY MUCH... and god FORBID if they pick Griardi to replace Toree...

Joe Torre did the right thing and I'm not even a Yankees fan. It was a principle of the matter. The Yankees strung him out and tried to make him the bad guy and then they lowballed him. If they didn't want to brign him back they should have just said so from the beginning instead of doing things the way they did it. They should have just went ahead and told Torre that they were finished with him instead of telling him that and then making him think that they might bring him back.

Guess you didnt watch the conference with Torre today. It wasnt about the money. It was about respect and pride. The Yankees offered no respect and Joe felt insulted. The man has done a lot for the Yankees.

Unlike you, some people don't live for money. Torre has scads of it. After the way he was treated in the divisional series, why should he take the job for some more money? That makes him the opposite of greedy. Why is everything always a negative? Maybe the man told Steinbrenner to stuff it.
When Steinbrenner is being generous, that is when he is the most untrustworthy.

He was smart; he wanted off the sinking ship. No A-Rod, Closer, etc...... Add an OLD lineup. The Yankees will be fortunate to get 3rd place in the AL east for the next years, and he won't have to put up with Steinbrenner, Yankee fans (?), and the New York media.

No but you are an idiot. I'm not a Yankee fan and can see that it would take thick skin and alot of teeth gritting to work for that dictator. Yeah it must be nice publicly having your job threatened every season. Can't blame Torre for refusing-go someplace an owner will appreciate you.

Maybe it's more of a sensitivity issue. Maybe he wants to see how far Steinbrenner will go to return him to the Yankees. Or maybe he wants something in there that says "will not fire if the Yankees do not get far in the play-offs."
